After a year of borrowing underwater housings for my cameras from friends and rental houses it was time to buy my own. Getting in and out of the water with waves crashing and good deal of large rocks hidden right below the surface necessitated something rugged as well as waterproof and compact. The Canon 5D mark2 has been my main camera for the night water shoots given its extreme low light sensitivity and manageable size. I contacted Ikelite, arguably the premier manufacturer of underwater housings for still and video cameras, who introduced me to their oldest distributor Scuba Basics in Indianapolis. SB’s owner William Baker shares my enthusiasm for shooting in extreme conditions and after seeing the short film offered to help me get the right set up without breaking my budget. After several shoots, including a hair-raising experience dealing with the early storm swells from Hurricane Earl, I couldn’t be happier with my new gear.
