Hard to believe but it’s been a year since we started shooting. Since then I’ve been out in 30 degree water where I saw sea water ice flows and seals (apparently they’re vicious), Frank get struck by lightning (more on that later, but he’s fine now) and spent A LOT of time driving around with Frank in his Excursion, or as I call it, the USS Blasko.
Working with editor Aaron Mathes, we were able to winnow down all that footage into a 5 minute short film, which will be screening at Cine Gear Expo at Paramount Studios in LA on June 3rd. I’m really looking forward to more shooting, already logged many gigabytes since we picture locked the short, narrowing all that footage (and the footage to come) down into a feature should be interesting. Here’s some stills from our first shoot, the only time we used a boat courtesy of Frank’s friend Jeff Sapperstein.
Me in the "safety harness" Frank and Paul insisted I wear my first time out. In truth the current was really strong, and the weight of my Sony EX1 in a Hydroflex bag combined with my inexperience made swimming that much harder. The splash bag from ASL worked great however, I'd like to take it out again for some day skishing
I've since been using my Canon 5D Mark 2 in an Ikelite housing because of its amazing low light capabilities. Without it I simply would not be able to shoot at night. A nice by product is the reduced weight and bulk of that set up.
